On searching
Thank you, Debbie Abilock, for updating and sprucing up one of my favorite tools for learners, “Choose the Best Search for Your Information Need.” http://www.noodletools.com/debbie/literacies/information/5locate/adviceengine.html. Debbie’s organized the search engines, directories, portals, etc. around learners’ authentic needs and includes major subject tools, media search tools, primary sources, and such emerging search strategies as tagging. A similar tool for selecting search strategies is U. Albany’s Laura Cohen’s How to Choose a Search Engine or Directory http://library.albany.edu/internet/choose.html. This resource was also recently updated and now includes blogs and RSS feeds.
Gary Price (http://www.resourceshelf.com) announced some cool new tools this week from NewspaperARCHIVE.com, with “tens of thousands of full text and full image ‘historical articles (free).” The resources include timelimes, historical background, and a helpful advanced search.
